The Nottinghamshire Open Championship took place at Worksop Golf Club on Friday 18 August. This brings together 12 top professionals from within the county with 12 amateurs in a two-round scratch stroke play competition.
After the morning rounds the leaders both with scores of 68 (4 under) were Lee Clarke (Professional – Beeston Fields GC) and Andy Willey (Professional – Bulwell Forest GC) followed by Darren Kirton the leading amateur (College Pines GC) on 69.
The second round started well in sunshine but thunder, lightning and hailstorms soon brought about a suspension in play but fortunately this lasted only 20 minutes or so and when the sun returned the greens recovered quickly from being temporarily flooded and play resumed only after a brief delay.
The afternoon play saw Clarke post a fine 69 to finish on a total of 137 (7 under) and take the Open title by 4 shots from Andy Willey whose second round 73 and total of 142 was good for second place with Retford professional James Freeman in third place. In fourth place and taking the leading amateur prize was veteran Ross Overton [trx_image url=”https://www.nottinghamshiregolf.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Open-Ross-and-Medal-225×300.jpg” align=”right” shape=”square” top=”inherit” bottom=”inherit” left=”inherit” right=”inherit”]who shot a fine 70 to go with his morning round 72 to finish on 2 under overall.
A great day had by all and many thanks again go to Worksop for all their support throughout the day.
